Online Nursing Degrees - friend or foe?

With the continued presence of technology in our society, it is no wonder that education is turning to the digital world.  Amongst all of online degree choices out there, it is difficult to know which option is the right one for you.  Recently, I have conducted research in the field of online nursing.   The University of Cincinnati now offers an Online Master of Science in Nursing- Nurse Midwifery or Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner degree.  Initially I was skeptical of the concept of online learning, especially in the health care profession.  However, I have found this program to have all of the necessary components of a successful degree program.

One important aspect to consider when searching for an online degree program is accreditation.  The University of Cincinnati holds the top educational accreditations available.  UC holds regional accreditation, the primary type of institutional accreditation in the United States.  It is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission as well as the Commission on Collegiate Nursing.

The field of nursing is, and has always been, one of the most respected professions.  For those in the field aching to continue their education and advance their career path this MSN program may be just what the doctor ordered.  A Certified Nurse-Midwife and a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner have a full scope of the issues surrounding women’s health care.  The Nurse-Midwife also advises women throughout the course of their pregnancy, assists in the delivery of children, and provides continuing medical care to the woman and child after the delivery.

The online learning environment allows students to continue their education at their own pace.  The unprecedented benefits of this program provide support at all levels for the student.  It seems that even the technologically challenged will have the ability to excel in this program.  In short, the program is traditional in every way except that the classroom itself is replaced by a computer.

Your readers may be interested in an LMS (Learner Management System) that enables nursing schools to offer online programs. It combines all the academic features teachers need to teach (store course material, create online tests, gradebook integrated with school's record database), students need to learn (ePortfolios, Wikis, Lessons, etc.), and a secure social network to keep everyone connected and learning online.
